What we are trying to do within this expanding market is to provide another choice for people who want a slightly less traditional feel to the architectural elements of their garden with an initial range which fulfils the brief of being contemporary yet still achieving a broad appeal. The seed for Garden Utility was planted 2 years ago when I first came across the technique of hand-casting using bath stone sand and white Portland cement to achieve a convincing stone like appearance - generally known as reconstituted stone. It has proved to be an ideal process for a small concern such as ours and as such our maximum turnover is inevitably fairly low. This has its upside for the client, as each piece is individually handmade, carefully quality controlled and checked before despatch. Also all our pieces are made to order therefore we can guarantee completion dates. We are both sculptors and designers with many years experience but we still found it no easy task to come up with our initial range, particularly to fulfil the brief as mentioned earlier. Our first instinct was to go wild and wacky but we soon realised that we do need to appeal to a broad market. However we are working on new ideas constantly and do intend to explore more sculptural pieces in the future. Watch this space. Michael
